Windows

Which version of Windows am I running?

Here are two easy ways to find out which version of Microsoft Windows you are running:

Option 1:

  1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.

  2. In the Run dialog box, type: winver

Your screen should look something like this:
The "Run" dialog box on Windows XP

  3. Click OK. You will see the About Windows dialog box:
The "About Windows" dialog box on Windows XP
This dialog box will tell you which version of Windows you are running. In this example, the computer is running Windows XP Professional (see the banner at the top of the box), Service Pack 2 (see the end of the version line).

Option 2:

  1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.

  2. In the Run dialog box, type: control sysdm.cpl

  3. Click OK. You will see the System Properties dialog box:
The "System Properties" dialog box on Windows XP
The System section of the General page of this dialog box will tell you which version of Windows you are running. In this example, the computer is running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2.
NB: The System Properties dialog box can also be reached by double-clicking System in Control Panel, or by right-clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop and choosing Properties.

If the System Properties dialog box doesn't have a General page

If the System Properties dialog box doesn't have a General page, you are probably running Windows Vista or later. In this case, follow these alternative steps to find your version:

  1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click the Windows button:
    Windows Start button
    and then click "Control Panel";

  2. In the Control Panel, click System and Security:
The Control Panel on Windows 7

  3. In the System and Security page, click System:
The System and Security Control Panel on Windows 7

  4. You will see the System Information page:
The "System Information" page on Windows 7
The Windows Edition section of the page will tell you which version of Windows you are running. In this example, the computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate.
